Makalu Base Camp is a popular trekking destination located in the Makalu-Barun National Park in the eastern region of Nepal. It is situated at an altitude of 4,870 meters above sea level and offers stunning views of the world's fifth highest mountain, Mount Makalu (8,485 meters).
The trek to Makalu Base Camp is a challenging and adventurous journey that takes you through remote villages, dense forests, and high mountain passes. The trek starts from Tumlingtar and follows the Arun River to reach the village of Num. From Num, the trail ascends through the Barun Valley, passing through beautiful rhododendron and bamboo forests, and crossing several high mountain passes.
The trek offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan range, including Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Kanchenjunga. The trail also passes through several traditional Sherpa villages, where you can experience the local culture and lifestyle.
The Makalu Base Camp trek is a teahouse trek, which means that you can stay in local lodges and teahouses along the way. The best time to visit Makalu Base Camp is from March to May and from September to November when the weather is clear and the views are spectacular.

Day 1 Arrival in Kathmandu & Transfer to Hotel.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, the team will be transferred to a hotel for rest and preparation for the expedition.
- Day 2 Rest in Kathmandu, expedition briefing and Preparation.
This day is for rest and preparation. The team will receive a briefing on the expedition and make final preparations.
- Day 3 Fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and drive to Num
Altitude: 1,560mThe team will take a flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and then drive to Num, the starting point of the trek.
- Day 4 Trek from Num to Seduwa
Altitude: 1,510mThe trekking begins with a walk from Num to Seduwa, passing through small villages and forests.
- Day 5 Trek from Seduwa to Tashi Gaun
Altitude: 2,070mThe trek continues to Tashi Gaun, a Sherpa village with stunning views of the surrounding mountains.
- Day 6 Acclimatization at Tashi Gaun (Rest Day).
This day is for acclimatization and rest in Tashi Gaun.
- Day 7 Trek from Tashi Gaun to Khongma
Altitude: 3,760mThe trek continues to Khongma, a high-altitude campsite with beautiful views of the mountains.
- Day 8 Trek from Khongma to Dobato (Camping)
Altitude: 4,010mThe trek continues to Dobato, a camping site with stunning views of the mountains.
- Day 9 Trek from Dobato to Yangle Kharka (Camping)
Altitude: 3,640mThe trek continues to Yangle Kharka, a camping site with beautiful views of the mountains.
- Day 10 Trek from Yangle Kharke to Langmale Kharka
Altitude: 4,450mThe trek continues to Langmale Kharka, a high-altitude campsite with stunning views of the mountains.
- Day 11 Trek from Langmale Kharke to Makalu Lower Basecamp (4,850m) Acclimatization in Lower Base Camp.
The team will reach the lower base camp of Makalu and spend time acclimatizing to the high altitude.
- Day 12-13 Acclimatization in Lower Base Camp (Rest day).
These two days are for acclimatization and rest in the lower base camp.
- Day 14 Hike from Lower Base camp to Higher (Main) Base Camp
Altitude: 5,600mThe team will hike from the lower base camp to the higher (main) base camp, which is at a higher altitude.
- Day 15-30 Rotation: [Basecamp – Rotation (Camp I, Camp II and Camp III) – Basecamp].
The team will spend 16 days in a rotation, which involves climbing to Camp I, Camp II, and Camp III and then returning to the base camp for rest and acclimatization.
- Day 31-42 Climbing Period [Base Camp – Makalu Summit (8,485m)– Base Camp].
Altitude: 8,485mThe team will spend 12 days climbing from the base camp to the summit of Makalu and then returning to the base camp.
- Day 43 Cleaning Up Base Camp.
The team will clean up the base camp and prepare to leave.
- Day 44 Trek from Makalu Base Camp to Yangle Kharka.
The team will trek back to Yangle Kharka.
- Day 45 Trek from Yangle Kharka to Khongma.
The team will trek back to Khongma.
- Day 46 Trek from Khongma to Seduwa.
The team will trek back to Seduwa.
- Day 47 Trek from Seduwa to Num and drive to Khadba.
The team will trek back to Num and then drive to Khadba.
- Day 48 Drive from Khandbari to Tumlingtar - Fly to Kathmandu & Transfer to the Hotel.
The team will drive from Khadba to Tumlingtar and then take a flight back to Kathmandu.
- Day 49 Leisure day in Kathmandu.
This day is for rest and relaxation in Kathmandu.
- Day 50 Transfer to International Airport for final departure.
The team will be transferred to the international airport for their final departure.
